Spent a gorgeous lunch hour
out and about, so must be quick. This isn't so much about adulthood as about
God. The adulthood part comes tomorrow.
If you aren't familiar with mewithoutyou you're missing something.
Thermonuclear emo. Incredible. They have a song called "Paperhanger"
about "The prettiest bag lady I ever met... she watched her day pass not
hour by hour but pain by pain." At the end the lyrics are:
If they ask you for the sign of the Father tell them it's movement and repose.
This is just fantastic. Movement, because God has no intention of leaving us
the way we are, and fully intends to change us radically. Repose, because God
takes us as we are and gives us secure standing in spite of that. So we can
rest (respose), but there will be movement. mewithoutyou is particularly good
at portraying this. Aaron Weiss sings it as:
"If they ask you for the sign of the father tell them it's movement
Movement MOVEMENT AAAAIIIIRRGGHHHHHH (and repose)", which is usually how
that feels. He screams for four full seconds. It hurts so good. A person in who
(whom?) God is working this dynamic is just going to look a bit different to
someone in whom God is not.
Tomorrow, one of the prime forms of movement that characterizes the transition
into adulthood.
