Why Health Care "Reform" was a Colossal Blunder |

How do I hate thee, health care “reform”? Let me count the ways:
First way: What’s FICA’s unfunded mandate up to? I think I last heard 8 TRILLION dollars. How about Medicare? I believe the last number I heard was 38 TRILLION dollars. This is the way government transfer payment programs go, and we all know it. The cost estimates are rosy, the spending estimates are rosy, the demographic projections are rosy, and then it all just goes straight to hell. Now tell me: if you didn’t have to cede a talking point or weaken a fervently held position to do so, would you agree that this program is going to be like the others in that way? Empirically, there really isn’t anywhere else to go on this one. It’s a slam-dunk. It’s certain. It’s never happened any other way. So what you have done, you see, is agreed to spend enormous, astronomical sums of money and hand the bill for most of it to the luckless schmutzes who come after us. But it makes you feel good and compassionate now, doesn’t it? And you can tell the Europeans that we play their game now and they can’t sneer at us any more, right? And with a little luck you’ll be gone before it’s impossible to postpone the disaster any more. So who cares what it will be? Massive unemployment? Sky-high taxes? Destruction of the currency? Most likely all three, in reverse order. That's all conservative talk, so let me put it in liberalese: MASSIVE HUMAN SUFFERING, ESPECIALLY THE POOR. But not now, and not us, so not to worry. Man. Where did all the adults go? Oh, and just a thought on all those superior Europeans- their government debt-to-GDP ratios are almost uniformly worse than ours. Hard as it is to believe, they are likely to go down before we do, despite our trade deficits. And their socialized health care is a big part of the reason. Remember when you wanted to do something with your friends and your Mom said it was stupid and you argued and she said “Well, if your friends jumped off a cliff, would YOU?” THE ANSWER WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE “YES”!!!! |
